Fragmented thoughts from my archives:
He made his way up the hill to Golgatha just outside Jerusalem. The path was worn and the air dusty. Sweat was beading from his brow. Emotions welled up from deep within driving his determination to reach the One they called "King of the Jews". He had heard the testimonies and witnessed the miracles. Up until this very day, he had been prevented from acting on his desire to speak to Jesus for he was enslaved by his earthy master who has driven him to the edge of despair.
He fought through the crowd, the sound of yelling and wailing filled the air. Making it within earshot of Jesus, he yelled out:
"Lord, I have striven long and hard to do what's right in your eyes but have been mocked, insulted and even beaten for even mentioning your Name. I cannot control my anger towards those who hate you. You have made your teachings clear to those with eager ears and many of us saw the signs and wonders you performed. Why do so many still deny you? What should I pray, Lord?"
Jesus raised His head and said:
“Forgive them, for they don’t know what they’re doing.”
Of course Jesus was right. This desperate man was reminded how he himself used to be indifferent towards the Word of The Lord. He could certainly relate, but could he forgive. He admitted to himself that this would take strength and humility far beyond his own capability..........
C.S. Lewis once said: A proud man is always looking down on things and people; and, of course, as long as you’re looking down, you can’t see something that’s above you. One of his contemporaries, T.S. Eliot wrote: Most of the trouble in the world is caused by people wanting to be important. Both echo the words of Proverbs 29:23: One’s pride will bring him low, but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor.
The Lord Himself reminds all peoples of all nations that: If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14
