A Godly Intervention
A totally preventable assassination attempt averted within millimeters
On July 13th, 2024 at an outdoor rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, the unthinkable happened. Shots were fired from a building outside the security perimeter by a very young man who was subsequently killed by Secret Service on site. Since then, the former President has recovered and has resumed his political campaign for a likely third term. As this photo was taken President Trump stood up to yell “fight”. Perhaps not the smartest thing to do since the gunman was still firing. So why then?
My observation is that this man loves America and everything it stands for, mainly freedom and gratefulness to Almighty God. Perhaps if you had been shot and were expecting imminent death you also would chant “Fight, fight!”. Yet the unending slew of social media posts and certain news articles as of late continue to reveal a lot of vitriol, oh not for the killer, but for the former, soon to be President. We have a sickness in America fueled in large part by our always present and easily accessible hand held devices. The art and social connection of face to face conversation is lost on many of us.
When I saw the photo at the top of the page I was reminded of the Marine Corps Memorial in Virginia. A flag in the midst of Americans fighting for what they believe in even when it may result in death.
I don’t know about you but I believe God intervened as Trump turned his head slightly at the last second (see photo below). You can’t come any closer than this without the bullet entering his skull. Last week the FBI director was fired for answering zero substantive questions at a hearing between lawmakers from both parties. A moment of solidarity not to repeated anytime soon.
Perhaps the most stunning admission of Secret Service failure of the event came from FBI director Cheatle herself who stated on ABC “That building in particular has a sloped roof at its highest point. And so, you know, there’s a safety factor that would be considered there that we wouldn’t want to put somebody up on a sloped roof.”
Of course sniper agents had zero difficulties with the sloped roof they fired from at the assassin several hundred feet away. Most likely a 2/12 vs. a 4/12 slope. Was this ignorance or complicity on Cheatle’s part? Hopefully we will know someday soon.
Thank our dear and precious Lord that this situation did not result in many deaths in light of the many bullets fired. We pray for the family of Corey Comperatore who was shot while shielding his family. Now that’s courage!
One final note, I believe Trump’s resolve and courage when he stood up permeated throughout the audience. This was evidenced by the fact that no one ran, but instead held their ground. And that’s also courage!

Jim, it's good to see another post from you. I'm inclined to agree that God spared Trump, but I have seen well-argued articles that we cannot conclude this was divine intervention. Perhaps the most troubling question is this: if we say God intervened for Trump, why didn't He for the man who died? We seem to make God capricious.
Of course, we can argue that notion, too, but the divergent conclusions remind us of the complexity of life and the need for wisdom and graciousness. I find great assurance in Abraham's statement when he questioned God about His handling of Sodom: "Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?"
If there's the sovereignty of God, then there must be divine intervention from the Most High.
